CENTAF releases airpower summary for Aug. 4 Published Aug. 5, 2006 SOUTHWEST ASIA (AFPN) -- U.S. Central Command Air Forces officials have released the airpower summary for Aug. 4. In Afghanistan Aug. 3, a Predator unmanned aerial vehicle conducted a precision strike against Taliban extremists in the vicinity of Kandahar, expending Hellfire missiles on the extremists' location. Also in the vicinity of Kandahar, Air Force A-10 Thunderbolt IIs and Royal Air Force GR-7 Harriers provided close-air support for coalition troops taking heavy small arms and rocket-propelled grenade fire. The A-10s expended general-purpose 500-pound bombs and Guided Bomb Unit-12s and conducted passes, expending cannon rounds and ending the engagement. In a separate engagement near Kandahar, Air Force A-10s, a B-1B Lancer, Royal Air Force GR-7s and French Air Force M-2000s provided close-air support for coalition troops in contact with anti-coalition forces. The A-10s expended general-purpose 500-pound bombs and GBU-12s and conducted passes, expending cannon rounds. The GR-7s expended an enhanced Paveway II 1,000-pound bomb and rockets. A-10s and a B-1B provided close-air support for coalition troops in contact with anti-coalition forces in the vicinity of Khowst. The B-1B expended GBU-38s, ending the engagement. A B-1B provided close air support for coalition troops in contact with anti-coalition forces in the vicinity of Musah Qal'eh, expending GBU-31s on enemy locations. A-10s also provided close-air support for coalition troops in contact with anti-coalition forces in the vicinity of Asadabad. Eight Air Force and French intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance, or ISR, aircraft flew missions in support of operations in Afghanistan. In total, coalition aircraft flew 27 close-air-support missions in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. These missions included support to coalition and Afghan troops, reconstruction activities and route patrols. In Iraq, Air Force F-16 Fighting Falcons conducted a precision strike against anti-Iraqi forces in the vicinity of Baghdad. The F-16s expended GBU-12s and -38s on the anti-Iraqi forces' location, achieving the intended effects. Air Force F-16s also provided close air support to coalition troops in contact with enemy forces in the vicinity of Kirkuk. Nineteen Air Force, Navy and Royal Air Force ISR aircraft flew missions in support of operations in Iraq . In total, coalition aircraft flew 42 close-air-support missions for Operation Iraqi Freedom. These missions included support to coalition troops, infrastructure protection, reconstruction activities and operations to deter and disrupt terrorist activities. On Aug. 2, an Air Force rescue and medical crew on an HH-60 Pave Hawk helicopter flew one medical evacuation mission in support of OEF. One coalition military member with injuries requiring urgent care was evacuated as a result of this mission. Air Force C-130 Hercules and C-17 Globemaster IIIs provided intra-theater heavy airlift support, helping sustain operations throughout Afghanistan, Iraq and the Horn of Africa. Approximately 180 airlift sorties were flown; almost 590 tons of cargo were delivered, and some 3,500 passengers were transported. Coalition C-130 crews from Australia, Canada, Japan and South Korea flew in support of either OIF or OEF. On Aug. 2, Air Force, Royal Air Force and French tankers flew 41 sorties and unloaded almost 2.4 million pounds of fuel.
