CENTAF releases airpower summary Published July 31, 2006 SOUTHWEST ASIA (AFPN) -- U.S. Central Command Air Forces officials released the airpower summary for July 31.In Afghanistan July 30, an Air Force B-1 Lancer provided close-air support for coalition troops taking small arms fire from Taliban extremists near Khowst. The B-1 expended a guided bomb unit-31 and a GBU-38 against the enemy positions, ending the engagement. An Air Force B-1 and French Air Force M-2000s provided close-air support for coalition troops taking small arms, rocket-propelled grenade and mortar fire from Taliban extremists near Lashkar Gah. The B-1 expended GBU-31s, destroying enemy bunkers in a tree line. The M-2000s expended GBU-12s against the extremists’ location, ending the engagement. In a separate engagement near Lashkar Gah, an Air Force B-1 also provided close-air support to coalition troops in contact with enemy forces, expending a GBU-31 and GBU-38s on enemy locations, ending the engagement. An Air Force B-1 provided close-air support for coalition troops taking small arms and rocket-propelled grenade fire from Taliban extremists near Oruzgan. The B-1 expended a GBU-31 on the enemy position, ending the engagement. Air Force A-10 Thunderbolt IIs also provided close-air support for coalition troops in contact with enemy forces near Gereshk, Jalalabad and Musah Qal’eh. Additionally, eight Air Force, Royal Air Force and French Air Force intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance, or ISR, aircraft flew missions in support of operations in Afghanistan. In total, coalition aircraft flew 24 close-air support missions in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. These missions included support to coalition and Afghan troops, reconstruction activities and route patrols. In Iraq, Air Force F-16 Fighting Falcons conducted a strike against anti-Iraqi forces in two buildings near Baghdad. The F-16s expended GBU-38s on the enemy positions. Air Force F-16s also provided close-air support to troops in contact with anti-Iraqi forces near Al Hawijah, Al Hillah and Baghdad. Additionally, 17 Air Force, Navy and Royal Air Force ISR aircraft flew missions in support of operations in Iraq. In total, coalition aircraft flew 44 close-air support missions for Operation Iraqi Freedom. These missions included support to coalition troops, infrastructure protection, reconstruction activities and operations to deter and disrupt terrorist activities. Air Force C-130 Hercules and C-17 Globemaster IIIs provided intra-theater heavy airlift support, helping sustain operations throughout Afghanistan, Iraq and the Horn of Africa. They flew approximately 190 airlift sorties, delivered more than 610 tons of cargo and transported 1,880 passengers. Coalition C-130 crews from Australia and Canada flew in support of either OIF or OEF. On July 29, Air Force, Royal Air Force and French Air Force tankers flew 40 sorties and off-loaded almost 2.5 million pounds of fuel.
