CENTAF releases airpower summary for July 30

U.S. Central Command Air Forces officials released the airpower summary for July 30.

In Afghanistan July 29, Air Force A-10 Thunderbolt IIs provided close air-support for coalition troops taking small arms and rocket-propelled grenade fire from Taliban extremists in the vicinity of Tarin Kowt. The A-10s conducted strafing passes, expended cannon rounds and dropped Guided Bomb Unit-12s on the enemy locations, ending the engagements.

An Air Force B-1B Lancer and A-10s provided close-air support for coalition troops taking rocket-propelled grenade and mortar fire from Taliban extremists near Musah Qal’eh. The B-1B expended GBU-31s and 38s on the extremists’ positions, ending the engagement.

Additionally, six Air Force and French Air Force Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance, or ISR, aircraft flew missions in support of operations in Afghanistan.

In total, coalition aircraft flew 21 close-air-support missions in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. These missions included support to coalition and Afghan troops, reconstruction activities and route patrols.

In Iraq, Air Force F-15E Strike Eagles provided close-air support to troops in contact with anti-Iraqi forces in the vicinity of Baghdad.

Air Force F-16 Fighting Falcons also provided close air support to troops in contact with anti-Iraqi forces in the vicinities of Al Amarah and Ar Ramadi.

Additionally, 17 Air Force, Navy, Royal Air Force and Royal Australian Air Force ISR aircraft flew missions in support of operations in Iraq

In total, coalition aircraft flew 46 close-air-support missions for Operation Iraqi Freedom. These missions included support to coalition troops, infrastructure protection, reconstruction activities and operations to deter and disrupt terrorist activities.

On July 28, Air Force rescue and medical crews on HH-60 Pave Hawk helicopters flew three medical evacuation missions in support of OEF. Three local national patients with injuries requiring urgent care were evacuated as a result of these missions.

Air Force C-130 Hercules and C-17 Globemaster IIIs provided intra-theater heavy airlift support, helping sustain operations throughout Afghanistan, Iraq and the Horn of Africa. Approximately 170 airlift sorties were flown; almost 580 tons of cargo were delivered, and some 2,670 passengers were transported. This included more than 10,400 pounds of troop re-supply material air-dropped in eastern Afghanistan.

Coalition C-130 crews from Australia and Canada flew in support of either OIF or OEF.

On July 28, Air Force, Royal Air Force and French Air Force tankers flew 42 sorties and off-loaded almost 2.6 million pounds of fuel.
