USAFSIA receives federal accreditation

Officials from the U.S. Air Force Special Investigations Academy in Glynco, Ga., announced July 20 its accreditation by the Federal Law Enforcement Training Accreditation Board of Directors.

The USAFSIA is the first Department of Defense law enforcement school to receive FLETA accreditation, said Raymond Carter, academy director. Officials from the academy began the FLETA accreditation process in December 2005.

FLETA was formed in 2000 to create law enforcement training standards within the federal law enforcement community.

The Air Force Office of Special Investigations sends all potential special agents to the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center in Glynco for the basic criminal investigator training program. After passing the initial course, students from each of the more than 80 federal agencies undergo organization-specific instruction.

FLETC received its accreditation in March.

"Our academy receiving FLETA accreditation puts an official stamp on the effectiveness of our training," said Col. John McElhenny, OSI director of operations. "Just as important, it affirms the interoperability of OSI with our fellow law enforcement agencies in ensuring the safety and security of our nation."

The FLETA accreditation is current for the next three years. The next step for the academy leadership is to get program accreditation for the basic special investigator's course.
