CENTAF releases airpower summary Published July 17, 2006 SOUTHWEST ASIA (AFPN) -- U.S. Central Command Air Forces officials have released the airpower summary for July 17.In Afghanistan July 16, an Air Force B-1B Lancer conducted precision strikes on Taliban extremist locations near Musah Qal'eh. The B-1B expended guided bomb unit-38s on extremists' buildings, destroying the buildings and ending the engagement. Air Force A-10 Thunderbolt IIs and Royal Air Force GR-7s provided close-air support to coalition troops taking small arms fire from Taliban extremists near Oruzgan. The A-10s expended general-purpose 500-pound bombs and conducted strafing passes, expending cannon rounds on the extremists' locations and ending the engagement. Air Force A-10s, a B-1B and Royal Air Force GR-7s provided close-air support to coalition troops taking small arms fire from Taliban extremists near Tarin Kowt. The B-1B expended GBU-31s and GBU-38s on the extremists' locations, ending the engagement. Additionally, seven Air Force and French Air Force intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance, or ISR, aircraft flew missions in support of operations in Afghanistan.In total, coalition aircraft flew 30 close-air support missions in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. These missions included support to coalition and Afghan troops, reconstruction activities and route patrols. In Iraq, Air Force F-16 Fighting Falcons provided close-air support to coalition troops in contact with anti-Iraqi forces near Al Mahmudiyah. Additionally, 14 Air Force and Navy ISR aircraft flew missions in support of operations in Iraq. In total, coalition aircraft flew 43 close-air support missions for Operation Iraqi Freedom. These missions included support to coalition troops, infrastructure protection, reconstruction activities and operations to deter and disrupt terrorist activities. On July 15, Air Force rescue and medical crews on HH-60 Pave Hawk helicopters flew two medical evacuation missions in support of OEF. Three Afghan National Army members and two local national patients with injuries requiring urgent care were evacuated. Air Force C-130 Hercules and C-17 Globemaster IIIs provided intra-theater heavy airlift support, helping sustain operations throughout Afghanistan, Iraq and the Horn of Africa. They flew 160 airlift sorties, delivered almost 570 tons of cargo and transported 3,560 passengers. This included more than 29,000 pounds of troop re-supply airdropped in central and eastern Afghanistan. Coalition C-130 crews from Australia flew in support of either OIF or OEF. On July 15, Air Force, French Air Force and Royal Air Force tankers flew 38 sorties and off-loaded almost 2.5 million pounds of fuel.
