CENTAF releases airpower summary Published July 16, 2006 SOUTHWEST ASIA (AFPN) -- U.S. Central Command Air Forces officials have released the airpower summary for July 16.In Afghanistan July 15, an Air Force B-1B Lancer and Predator unmanned aerial vehicle conducted a precision strike against a Taliban extremist's position near Musah Qal'eh. The B-1B expended guided bomb unit-31s. In a separate engagement near Musah Qal'eh, Air Force A-10 Thunderbolt IIs and a B-1B provided close-air support for coalition forces taking small arms fire from Taliban extremists. The B-1B expended a GBU-38 and a GBU-31 on an enemy vehicle, destroying the vehicle and ending the engagement. Air Force A-10s also conducted strafing passes on Taliban extremists' positions and vehicles during another close-air support mission for coalition forces taking small arms, rocket-propelled grenade and mortar fire near Musah Qal'eh. The A-10s destroyed enemy vehicles and successfully ended the engagement. An Air Force B-1B provide close-air support for coalition forces by expending GBU-31s and GBU-38s on Taliban extremist positions near Tarin Kowt. In a separate engagement near Tarin Kowt, Air Force A-10s and a B-1B provided close-air support for coalition forces taking small arms and rocket-propelled grenade fire from Taliban extremists. The A-10s conducted strafing passes expending cannon rounds on the extremists' locations, ending the engagement. Air Force A-10s and a B-1B also provided close-air support for coalition forces taking small arms and rocket-propelled grenade fire from Taliban extremists near Oruzgan. The B-1B expended GBU-38s on the extremists' locations, ending the engagement. Additionally, six Air Force intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance, or ISR, aircraft flew missions in support of operations in Afghanistan. In total, coalition aircraft flew 25 close-air support missions in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. These missions included support to coalition and Afghan troops, reconstruction activities and route patrols. Fifteen Air Force, Navy and Royal Air Force ISR aircraft flew missions in support of operations in Iraq. In total, coalition aircraft flew 45 close-air support missions for Operation Iraqi Freedom. These missions included support to coalition troops, infrastructure protection, reconstruction activities and operations to deter and disrupt terrorist activities. Air Force C-130 Hercules and C-17 Globemaster IIIs provided intra-theater heavy airlift support, helping sustain operations throughout Afghanistan, Iraq and the Horn of Africa. They flew 160 airlift sorties, delivered more than 450 tons of cargo and transported 3,090 passengers.Coalition C-130 crews from Canada and Japan flew in support of either OIF or OEF. On July 14, Air Force, French Air Force and Royal Air Force tankers flew 43 sorties and off-loaded almost 2.6 million pounds of fuel.
