CENTAF releases airpower summary

U.S. Central Command Air Forces officials have released the airpower summary for July 10.

In Afghanistan, Air Force A-10 Thunderbolt IIs and a B-1B Lancer provided close-air support to coalition troops taking small arms and rocket-propelled grenade fire from Taliban extremists in the vicinity of Oruzgan. The B-1B expended four joint direct attack munitions on an enemy compound, destroying it.

In a separate engagement, an MQ-1 Predator unmanned aerial vehicle conducted a precision strike against an enemy sniper position in the vicinity of Kandahar. The Predator expended a Hellfire missile on the sniper's location, ending the engagement.

Air Force A-10s and French Air Force M-2000s provided close-air support for coalition forces taking small arms and rocket-propelled grenade fire from Taliban extremists in the vicinity of Qalat.

Air Force A-10s also provided close-air support to coalition troops in contact with enemy forces near Gereshk.

Additionally, seven Air Force, French Air Force and Royal Air Force Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance, or ISR, aircraft flew missions in support of operations in Afghanistan.

In total, coalition aircraft flew 24 close-air-support missions in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. These missions included support to coalition and Afghan troops, reconstruction activities and route patrols.

In Iraq, Air Force F-16 Fighting Falcons provided close air support to coalition troops in contact with anti-Iraqi forces in the vicinities of Al Hawijah and Al Mahmudiyah.

Additionally, 15 Air Force, U.S. Navy and Royal Air Force ISR aircraft flew missions in support of operations in Iraq .

In total, coalition aircraft flew 42 close-air-support missions for Operation Iraqi Freedom. These missions included support to coalition troops, infrastructure protection, reconstruction activities and operations to deter and disrupt terrorist activities.

On July 8, an Air Force rescue and medical crew on a HH-60 Pave Hawk helicopter flew one medical evacuation mission in support of OEF. One patient, a local national, with injuries requiring urgent care was evacuated as a result of this mission.

Air Force C-130 Hercules and C-17 Globemaster IIIs provided intra-theater heavy airlift support, helping sustain operations throughout Afghanistan, Iraq and the Horn of Africa. Approximately 150 airlift sorties were flown; almost 400 tons of cargo were delivered, and some 2,440 passengers were transported. This included more than 10,470 pounds of troop re-supply air-dropped in central Afghanistan.

Coalition C-130 crews from Australia and Korea flew in support of either OIF or OEF.
On July 8, Air Force, French Air Force and Royal Air Force tankers flew 42 sorties and off-loaded almost 2.6 million pounds of fuel.
