CENTAF releases airpower summary for June 23

U.S. Central Command Air Forces officials released the airpower summary for June 23.

In Afghanistan June 22, an Air Force B-1B Lancer and MQ-1 Predator unmanned aerial vehicle, French air force Mirages and Royal Air Force Harrier GR-7s provided close-air support to coalition forces taking small-arms fire from Taliban extremists near Deh Rawood. The GR-7s expended a rocket on the extremists' location, ending the engagement.

Air Force A-10 Thunderbolt IIs and a B-1B also provided close-air support to coalition troops in contact with enemy forces near Asadabad.

Six Air Force and Navy intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance, or ISR, aircraft flew missions in support of operations in Afghanistan.

In total, coalition aircraft flew 28 close-air-support missions in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. These missions included support to coalition and Afghan troops, reconstruction activities and route patrols.

In Iraq, Air Force F-15E Strike Eagles and F-16 Fighting Falcons and Navy F-18 Hornets provided close-air support to coalition troops in contact with anti-Iraqi forces near Baghdad and Ramadi.

In addition, 11 Air Force and Navy ISR aircraft flew missions in support of operations in Iraq.

In total, coalition aircraft flew 54 close-air-support missions for Operation Iraqi Freedom. These missions included support to coalition troops, infrastructure protection, reconstruction activities and operations to deter and disrupt terrorist activities.

On June 21, Air Force rescue and medical crews on HH-60 Pave Hawk helicopters flew four medical evacuation missions in support of OEF. Seven patients with injuries requiring urgent care were evacuated on these missions. They included U.S. and coalition forces and a non-military member.

Air Force C-130 Hercules and C-17 Globemaster IIIs provided intra-theater heavy airlift support, helping sustain operations throughout Afghanistan, Iraq and the Horn of Africa. They flew 160 airlift sorties, delivered 230 tons of cargo and transported 2,120 passengers. This included more than 13,960 pounds of troop resupply airdropped in eastern Afghanistan.

Coalition C-130 crews from Australia, Canada, Japan and Korea flew in support of either OIF or OEF.

On June 21, U.S., French and Royal Air Force tankers flew 44 sorties and off-loaded almost 2.9 million pounds of fuel.
