CENTAF releases airpower summary for June 22

U.S. Central Command Air Forces officials released the airpower summary for June 22.

In Afghanistan June 21, an Air Force MQ-1 Predator unmanned aerial vehicle conducted a precision strike on a group of Taliban extremists near Gereshk. The Predator UAV expended a Hellfire missile, ending the engagement.

An Air Force B-1B Lancer provided close-air support to coalition forces taking small-arms fire from Taliban extremists near Tarin Kowt. The B-1B expended precision-guided munitions on the extremists' positions, ending the engagement.

In a separate engagement, Air Force A-10 Thunderbolt IIs and a B-1B provided close-air support to coalition forces taking small-arms fire from Taliban extremists near Asadabad. The B-1B expended precision-guided munitions, ending the engagement.

Seven Air Force and French air force intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance, or ISR, aircraft flew missions in support of operations in Afghanistan.

In total, coalition aircraft flew 26 close-air-support missions in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. These missions included support to coalition and Afghan troops, reconstruction activities and route patrols.

In Iraq, Navy F-18 Hornets conducted a precision strike against anti-coalition forces massed in a courtyard near Al Mahmudiyah. The aircraft expended a Maverick missile, ending the engagement.

Air Force F-15E Strike Eagles and Royal Air Force Tornado GR-4s also provided close-air support to coalition troops in contact with anti-Iraqi forces near Al Mahmudiyah, Najaf and Tikrit.

Additionally, 15 Air Force, Navy, Royal Australian Air Force and Royal Air Force ISR aircraft flew missions in support of operations in Iraq. A Navy fighter aircraft performed in a non-traditional ISR role with their electro-optical and infrared sensors.

In total, coalition aircraft flew 60 close-air-support missions for Operation Iraqi Freedom. These missions included support to coalition troops, infrastructure protection, reconstruction activities and operations to deter and disrupt terrorist activities.

Air Force C-130 Hercules and C-17 Globemaster IIIs provided intra-theater heavy airlift support, helping sustain operations throughout Afghanistan, Iraq and the Horn of Africa. They flew 140 airlift sorties, delivered 380 tons of cargo and transported 3,100 passengers. This included more than 13,200 pounds of troop resupply airdropped in central Afghanistan, bringing the total amount of supplies airdropped in June to more than 550,000 pounds.

Coalition C-130 crews from Australia flew in support of either OIF or OEF.

On June 20, U.S. Air Force, French and Royal Air Force tankers flew 41 sorties and off-loaded almost 2.6 million pounds of fuel.
