Falcons wrap up season at annual twilight meet Published May 8, 2006 U.S. AIR FORCE ACADEMY, Colo. (AFPN) -- The Air Force track and field team wrapped up the 2006 regular season hosting the Ris Westen Twilight Invitational at the Academy May 5. Senior Genelle Chapman picked up a pair of first-place finishes as one of 14 Falcons to win an event at the annual end-of-season meet. Chapman, a Colorado Springs native, picked up a first-place mark in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 14.58 seconds and won the 100-meter dash with a time of 12.56. In addition, four other seniors claimed first-place marks in their final regular season contests. Amy Gilliland cleared the bar at 11feet 1 3/4 inches to win the pole vault, while Dana Pounds recorded a distance of 185’10” to easily claim the javelin title. Fellow senior Jason Jones claimed the top mark in the men’s pole vault after clearing 15’1” to tie with sophomore Joel Nolan and senior Dan St. Clair won the discus behind a throw of 167’9”. Eight other Falcons earned first-place finishes. Sophomore Kelly Robinson won the 800-meter run with a time of 2:15.46, while junior Casey Johnson recorded a triple jump distance of 38’3 1/4”. In addition to tying for first in the pole vault, Nolan used a season-best time of 15.34 to win the 110-meter hurdles. Sophomore Kenny Grosselin clocked a 9:08.99 to win the 3,000-meter run, while classmate John Payne clocked a career-best 54.73 win in the 400-meter dash. Junior Olivia Korte won the discus throw with a toss of 141’, while freshman Addison Schenk jumped 46’2” to win the triple jump. In addition to the 14 first-place finishes, Air Force Falcons accounted for 20 other top-three marks collecting two of the top three spots in 10 events. Senior Jen Neville and sophomore Kim Brady finished second and third in the 400-meter hurdles; clocking respective times of 66.17 and 66.35. Falcons also earned second and third-place marks in the high jump, as junior Dawn Higginbotham tallied a height of 5’3” and classmate Lindsay Bengard cleared the bar at 5’1”. Fellow junior Olivia Korte tossed a season-best 162’4” in the hammer throw to finish second, while senior Kristine Muth threw a 143’3” to finish third. Junior Brandon Murphy recorded a 195’8” to take second in the javelin throw, while classmate Marcus Wells finished third at 193’2”. Behind Chapman’s victory in the 100-meter dash, junior Ayana Floyd-James finished third with a time of 12.82. Classmate Becky Stone cleared a 10’2” in the pole vault to finish second to Gilliland. Freshman Yvonne Johnston finished third in the javelin throw with a throw of 130’2”. Muth also picked up a third-place mark of 116’3” in the discus throw to finish third to Korte. Freshman Skylar Morgan clocked a time of 15.83 in the 110-meter hurdles to finish third behind Nolan, while sophomore David Lissy tossed a 154’3” to take third in the discus throw. Floyd-James also clocked a time of 26.64 to finish third in the 200-meter dash, while Korte used a 42’8 3/4” in the shot put to place second. On the men’s side, freshman Greg Smith took third in the 800-meter run with a time of 1:58.47, while classmate Sebastian Ortiz finished second in the 1500-meter run with a time of 4:04.05. Junior Bryan Jones recorded a distance of 49’6 1/2” in the shot to take second, while senior Chikaodi Akalaonu registered the same finish in the hammer throw behind a season-best 172’10”. Air Force heads to Provo, Utah, May 10 to 13 for the 2006 Mountain West Conference Championships.
