CENTAF releases combined airpower summary Published May 8, 2006 SOUTHWEST ASIA (AFPN) -- U.S. Central Command Air Forces officials released the combined airpower summary for May 5 to 7. May 7 Coalition aircraft flew 56 close-air-support missions in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. They included support to coalition troops, infrastructure protection, reconstruction activities, and operations to deter and disrupt terrorist activities. Air Force F-15 Eagles provided close-air support to coalition troops in contact with anti-Iraqi forces near Al Mahmudiyah. In addition, 12 Air Force, Navy and Royal Air Force intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance, or ISR, aircraft flew missions in support of operations in Iraq. Navy fighter aircraft flew in a non-traditional ISR role with their electro-optical and infrared sensors. In Afghanistan, coalition aircraft flew 24 close-air-support missions in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. They included support to coalition and Afghan troops, reconstruction activities and presence route patrols. An Air Force B-52 Stratofortress provided close-air support to coalition troops in contact with enemy forces near Shkin. Five Air Force ISR aircraft flew missions in support of operations in Afghanistan. Air Force C-130 Hercules and C-17 Globemaster IIIs provided intratheater heavy airlift support, helping sustain operations throughout Afghanistan, Iraq and the Horn of Africa. They flew 155 airlift sorties, transported 3,025 passengers and delivered 500 tons of cargo including nine thousand pounds of troop re-supply air-dropped in Afghanistan. Coalition C-130 crews from Australia, Canada and South Korea flew in support of either OIF or OEF. On May 6 Air Force, RAF and French Air Force tankers flew 36 sorties and off-loaded almost 2.4 million pounds of fuel. May 6In Iraq yesterday, Air Force F-16 Fighting Falcons provided close-air support to coalition troops under small-arms fire near Tall Afar. The F-16s successfully struck enemy forces in the area with a precision-guided munition, ending the engagement. In addition, Air Force F-16s provided close-air support to coalition troops in contact with anti-Iraqi forces near Al Mahmudiyah. In total, coalition aircraft flew 55 close-air-support missions for Operation Iraqi Freedom. They included support to coalition troops, infrastructure protection, reconstruction activities, and operations to deter and disrupt terrorist activities. Thirteen Air Force and Navy ISR aircraft flew missions in support of operations in Iraq. Navy fighter aircraft flew in a non-traditional ISR role with their electro-optical and infrared sensors. In Afghanistan, coalition aircraft flew 28 close-air-support missions in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. They included support to coalition and Afghan troops, reconstruction activities and presence route patrols. Five Air Force ISR aircraft flew missions in support of operations in Afghanistan. Air Force C-130s and C-17s provided intratheater heavy airlift support, helping sustain operations throughout Afghanistan, Iraq and the Horn of Africa. They flew 190 airlift sorties, transported 3,775 passengers and delivered 360 tons of cargo including nine thousand pounds of troop re-supply air-dropped in Afghanistan. Coalition C-130 crews from Australia, Canada and South Korea flew in support of either OIF or OEF. On May 5 Air Force, RAF and FAF tankers flew 33 sorties and off-loaded almost 2.2 million pounds of fuel. May 5In Iraq, Air Force F-16s provided close-air support to coalition troops in contact with enemy forces near Balad. One of the F-16s expended a precision-guided weapon against enemy positions, ending the engagement. In addition, Air Force F-16s and Navy F/A-18 Hornets provided close-air support to coalition troops in contact with anti-Iraqi forces near Al Mahmudiyah, Baghdad, Balad and Tikrit. In total, coalition aircraft flew 48 close-air-support missions for Operation Iraqi Freedom. They included support to coalition troops, infrastructure protection, reconstruction activities, and operations to deter and disrupt terrorist activities. In addition, 11 Air Force and Navy ISR aircraft flew missions in support of operations in Iraq. Air Force and Navy fighter aircraft flew in a non-traditional ISR role with their electro-optical and infrared sensors. In Afghanistan, coalition aircraft flew 13 close-air-support missions in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. They included support to coalition and Afghan troops, reconstruction activities and presence route patrols. An Air Force B-52 and A-10 Thunderbolt IIs provided close-air support to coalition troops in contact with enemy forces near Orgun-E. Eight Air Force ISR aircraft flew missions in support of operations in Afghanistan. Air Force C-130s and C-17s provided intratheater heavy airlift support, helping sustain operations throughout Afghanistan, Iraq and the Horn of Africa. They flew 180 airlift sorties, delivered 555 tons of cargo and transported 3,240 passengers. Coalition C-130 crews from Australia, Canada, and South Korea flew in support of either OIF or OEF. On May 4 Air Force and RAF tankers flew 38 sorties and off-loaded almost 2.5 million pounds of fuel.
