Aircraft maintenance accident investigation complete

Air Mobility Command today released the results of its investigation into the Dec. 17, 2005, mishap involving an aircraft maintenance technician assigned to the 60th Air Mobility Wing at Travis Air Force Base, Calif.

The Accident Investigation Board, convened by AMC, concluded the primary cause of the mishap was a failure by the technician to follow Air Force Occupational Safety and Health standards when he used an unserviceable B-2 Spirit maintenance stand while performing maintenance work on a KC-10A Extender.

Senior Airman James Harris, a 660th Aircraft Maintenance Squadron technician, suffered fatal injuries when he fell 13 feet through an open railing of the maintenance stand. Airman Harris received emergency treatment and was transported to the David Grant Medical Center on base. Although he was quickly treated, his injuries were too severe and he died on Dec. 21.

At the time of the incident, Airman Harris was making repairs to the left horizontal stabilizer of the KC-10A, a job which required the use of the maintenance stand.
