AF drops emergency relief to isolated Afghan village

Air Force cargo aircraft dropped 11,840 pounds of rice, oil, blankets and other emergency relief supplies Feb. 9 to a village in central Afghanistan that was isolated when roads were closed due to excessive snow.

At the request of the Afghan government, an Air Force C-130 Hercules flown by an Alaska Air National Guard crew dropped 10 container delivery system bundles of supplies to Ajrestan, a mountain village 9,000 feet above sea level.

“Humanitarian assistance has been a critical part of our efforts in Afghanistan,” said Brig. Gen. Darren McDew, director of mobility forces for U.S. Central Command Air Forces. “It is very satisfying to be helping the Afghan people on behalf of their freely elected government.”

The locations where humanitarian supplies were needed are identified by the Afghan National Army and coordinated at the Combined Air Operations Center in Southwest Asia. Since January there have been 37 airdrops, delivering more than 350,000 pounds of humanitarian relief supplies in Afghanistan.
