CHARLESTON AIR FORCE BASE, S.C. (AFPN) -- Volunteers from the 701st Airlift Squadron here came together to help make the holidays a little brighter for those in need. Squadron members have adopted a family through the Department of Social Services, as well as provided Christmas gifts and food for the Charleston Women’s Homeless Shelter.
“We in the military are very fortunate,” said Master Sgt. Connie Danbury, an aviation resource management superintendent and volunteer coordinator. “I enjoy giving back to the community (and to) those in need.”
After adopting a local family through social services, the unit collected enough money and donations to pay the bills and some groceries, as well as buy the children toys on their wish list.
“We are doing things that will not just get them through Christmas but help through winter and spring,” said the squadron commander, Lt. Col. Mike Speer. “It’s all about the family. We want to make sure they are provided for over the holidays.”
According to Colonel Speer, the Airmen collected Bout $1,000 to help with expenses, and other necessities and gifts.
“The response (from the squadron members) has been overwhelming,” said Sergeant Danbury. “Christmas is all about giving and sharing with those not quite as lucky as we are.”
“I’m continually impressed with the generosity of the squadron and how they step forward in situations where some can use a hand,” Colonel Speer said. “It’s very impressive.”
Wing and squadron members also brought Christmas to the Charleston Women’s Homeless Shelter. Volunteers have been helping the women’s shelter since March, providing dinner once a month. However, for the holidays, they decided to extend their help and provide gifts for all the women and children in the shelter.
