Chief Master Sgt. of the Air Force Gerald R. Murray thanked all Airmen for their service and wished them a happy holiday season during an interview Dec. 19 at the Pentagon.

"Thank you -- our Airmen and families -- for everything you've done in the past year," Chief Murray said. "I couldn't be more proud of the Airmen who voluntarily serve their nation at a time of war … from the newest Airmen to those who remain committed to service throughout their career and lead this force throughout the challenges of the future."

Chief Murray said even when the nation is in a time of war, with Soldiers, Sailors, Marines, Airmen and Coast Guardsmen deployed worldwide in harms way; there is thanks to be given.

"We serve the greatest nation and military in the world, and we have a lot to be thankful for in that regard," he said.

Through it all, he said people are our No. 1 priority.

"We continue to invest in our Airmen in the quality of service and quality of life across the total force -- Guard, reserve and active duty," Chief Murray said. "We put our people first and foremost, because they are most important."

The future will bring challenges, but none the Air Force can’t handle. Deployments will continue and are part of the Air Force expeditionary role, he said.

"Airmen need to ensure their families are prepared the best they can and be ready to deploy and employ wherever and whenever our Air Force needs us," he said. As many noncommissioned officers have told him during his travels "that is what we do."

The chief hopes all Airmen understand what an exciting time they are serving in and realize history is being written every day.

“Our Air Force is at war and has been for the past 15 years,” said Chief Murray. “We are continuing to transform to meet the demands of combat today, and the demands of tomorrow. Airmen just coming into our service will see a very different force than the one I’ve served for the past 28 years. And that’s exciting. As we look to the New Year and new beginnings, we can appreciate our heritage and embrace our future in the world’s greatest Air Force.

“I wish everyone a Merry Christmas, happy holidays and a safe and prosperous new year,” the chief said.
