CENTAF releases airpower summary

Officials at U.S. Central Command Air Forces released today’s airpower summary.

Coalition aircraft flew 58 close air support and armed reconnaissance sorties Nov. 8 for Operation Iraqi Freedom. These missions included support to coalition troops, infrastructure protection, reconstruction activities, and operations to deter and disrupt terrorist activities.

Coalition aircraft also supported Iraqi and coalition ground forces operations to create a secure environment for ongoing Transitional National Assembly meetings.

An Air Force F-15 Eagle flew an air strike against an anti-Iraqi forces weapon cache in the vicinity of Karabilah. The fighter successfully dropped a precision-guided munition.

Navy F-14 Tomcats flew an air strike against a building used by insurgents in the vicinity of Husaybah. The fighters successfully dropped precision-guided munitions.

Air Force F-16 Fighting Falcons flew an air strike in the vicinity of Balad. The fighters successfully dropped precision-guided munitions against anti-Iraqi forces.

F-16s provided close air support to coalition troops in contact with anti-Iraqi forces in the vicinity of Bayji.

In addition, nine Air Force and Navy intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance aircraft flew missions in support of operations in Iraq. Also, Air Force and Royal Air Force fighters flew in a non-traditional ISR role with their electro-optical and infrared sensors.

In Afghanistan, coalition aircraft flew 20 close air support and armed reconnaissance sorties in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. These missions included support to coalition and Afghan troops, reconstruction activities and the conduct of presence route patrols.

In addition, five Air Force ISR aircraft flew missions in support of operations in Afghanistan. RAF fighters flew in a non-traditional ISR role.

Air Force C-130 Hercules and C-17 Globemaster IIIs provided intra-theater heavy airlift support, helping sustain operations throughout Afghanistan, Iraq and the Horn of Africa. They flew more than 155 airlift sorties, delivered about 370 tons of cargo and transported some 2,400 passengers.

Coalition C-130 crews from Japan and South Korea flew in support of either OIF or OEF.

On Nov. 7, Air Force tankers flew 35 sorties and off-loaded more than 2.6 million pounds of fuel.
