Air Force releases report on fatal traffic accident Published Oct. 31, 2005 LANGLEY AIR FORCE BASE, Va. (AFPN) -- The driver of a van carrying three Air Force Airmen fell asleep at the wheel and subsequently lost control of the vehicle, resulting in a fatal single-vehicle traffic accident near Wady El Na Natron City, Egypt, Sept. 19, Air Force officials announced today. One Air Force officer was killed, and two enlisted Airmen and the driver were injured during the accident. According to the accident investigation board report, the accident happened on a four-lane divided highway between Cairo and Mubarak Military City when the driver fell asleep and the vehicle started to depart the paved surface. Upon waking up, the driver jerked the wheel to the right, returning the vehicle to the paved surface, but subsequently lost control of the vehicle, which rolled several times before coming to rest upside-down on the opposite side of the highway. Excessive speed was also cited as a factor in the accident. The accident occurred during a recurring joint/combined exercise called Bright Star, which aims to share tactics and increase security cooperation among allies in the Middle East.
