Controlling the sky
YOKOTA AIR BASE, Japan -- Staff Sgt. Carmen Jones (left) and Senior Airman David Winkfield use radarscopes to coordinate aircraft movement here. The 374th Operations Support Squadron radar approach control technicians are responsible for military, general and commercial aviation aircraft that use eight separate airports which encompass 8,575 miles of airspace in the Tokyo area. The Airmen keep planes at safe distances from each other, direct them during takeoff and landing from airports, direct them around bad weather and ensure that traffic flows smoothly with minimal delays.
