Flyover to honor chief of staff change

Old and new fighter aircraft will perform a farewell flyover for the outgoing Air Force chief and welcome the new chief during a ceremony at Andrews Air Force Base, Md., on Sept. 2.

Gen. John P. Jumper, the current Air Force chief of staff, will retire and pass the flag to the current vice chief of staff, Gen. T. Michael Moseley, who will become the 18th Air Force chief of staff during the ceremony scheduled for 10 a.m. EDT.

Acting Secretary of the Air Force Pete Geren will preside over the ceremony and administer the oath to General Moseley. Also scheduled to participate in the ceremony are Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Richard B. Myers.

Aircraft teams performing the flyover include the Heritage Flight team and the U.S. Air Force Weapons School formation team.

The Heritage Flight features an A-10 Thunderbolt II from the 23rd Fighter Group at Pope AFB, N.C.; an F-15 Eagle from the 33rd Fighter Wing at Eglin AFB, Fla.; and a P-51 Mustang and F-86 Sabre, both civilian-owned aircraft.

The weapons school team consists of an F-15, F-16 Fighting Falcon from the 57th Wing at Nellis AFB, Nev., and an F/A-22 Raptor from the 1st Fighter Wing at Langley AFB, Va.

The event will be broadcast live on the Pentagon Channel and on Air Force Link at www.af.mil/csaf/player.html.
