The 45th Space Wing supported the successful launch of a satellite to Mars on Aug. 12.

An Atlas V rocket from nearby Cape Canaveral Air Force Station launched the NASA Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter satellite into space.

“The men and women of the 45th Space Wing provided top-notch range services to NASA,” said Col. Mark Owen, 45th SW commander. “Interplanetary exploration missions are especially exciting -- they are simply out of this world. We are happy with this successful launch.”

The 45th SW provided support to Lockheed Martin and International Launch Services, who served as the commercial satellite and booster vehicle provider to NASA.

The satellite will explore terrain features and atmospheric conditions as well as examine future, potential landing sites when it arrives at the red planet in 2006.
