Officials find nothing wrong with cadet’s e-mail Published June 8, 2005 U.S. AIR FORCE ACADEMY, Colo. (AFPN) -- Air Force and academy legal officials found that a former cadet wing commander’s e-mail and its attachment contained neither information that violated the Establishment Clause of the Constitution, nor any Department of Defense or Air Force policies or instructions.Newly commissioned 2nd Lt. Nicholas Jurewicz sent the e-mail and its 22-page attachment of leadership- and character-related quotations May 31 as his end-of-tour, farewell message to cadets who were under his command during the spring semester. The attachment contained about 300 quotations, 30 of which either mentioned God in some form or were taken from the Bible. It also contained quotes from Buddha, Gandhi, Confucius, poets, authors, presidents, military leaders and many others. The legal review determined that there was no attempt to convince any of the recipients of the intrinsic value of any one quote or quote source. Lieutenant Jurewicz made it plain in his farewell message at the termination of his command position that there was no compulsion for any recipient to read and/or heed what was presented. Considering the facts of the message and the attachment in their entirety, legal experts determined that no law or policy was violated. On the issue of the propriety of sending the e-mail, Lieutenant Jurewicz acted within the authority of his position as cadet wing commander addressing the cadet wing upon his departure from that position and graduation from the academy.
