Air Force announces media contest winners

A panel of civilian journalists, teachers and public relations professionals selected the best in Air Force print and broadcast journalism for the 48th annual Air Force Media Contest. The winners were announced March 31.

Geoff Janes, from the 78th Air Base Wing at Robins Air Force Base, Ga., is the Air Force print journalist of the year. Tech. Sgt. Rusty Barfield, from the Air Force News Agency Operating Location E at Hickam AFB, Hawaii, is the Air Force broadcast journalist of the year.

Mr. Janes and Sergeant Barfield will join the winners in other broadcast and print journalism categories to represent the Air Force in the annual Department of Defense Thomas Jefferson Awards competition.

Winners in the print-media category are:

-- Metro-Format Newspaper: Robins Rev-Up from the 78th Air Base Wing at Robins.

-- Tabloid-Format Newspaper: Keesler News from the 81st Training Wing at Keesler AFB, Miss.

-- Magazine-Format Publication: Gulf Wing from the 403rd Wing at Keesler.

-- Newsletter-Format Publication: Wingspan from the 53rd Wing at Eglin AFB, Fla.

-- News Article: Senior Airman Amanda McCarty from the 89th Airlift Wing at Andrews AFB, Md.

-- Feature Article: Staff Sgt. Russell Wicke from the 51st Fighter Wing at Osan Air Base, South Korea.

-- Commentary: Senior Airman Micah Garbarino from the 75th Air Base Wing at Hill AFB, Utah.

-- Sports Article: Staff Sgt. J. Justin Pearce from the 403rd Wing at Keesler.

-- Series: Rudy Purificato from the 311th Human Systems Wing at Brooks City-Base, Texas.

-- Stand-Alone Photograph: Senior Airman Christopher Hummel from the 56th Fighter Wing at Luke AFB, Ariz.

-- Photojournalism: Staff Sgt. Randy Lee Redman from the 6th Air Mobility Wing at MacDill AFB, Fla.

-- Arts and graphics in support of a publication: Staff Sgt. Brian Bahret from the 78th ABW.

-- Contribution by a Contractor/Stringer (Writer): Bob Hieronymus from the 12th Fighter Wing at Randolph AFB, Texas.

-- Contribution by a Contractor/Stringer (Photo): Charley Starr from the U.S. Air Force Academy, Colo.

-- Deployed Publication: Rock Slate from the 386th Air Expeditionary Wing in Southwest Asia.

-- Web-Based Publication: Intercom Online from the Air Force Communications Agency at Scott AFB, Ill.

-- Outstanding New Writer: Staff Sgt. Melissa Koskovich from the 366th Fighter Wing at Mountain Home AFB, Idaho.
