Albuquerque high school student wins ‘Perfect Prom’ Published March 11, 2005 RANDOLPH AIR FORCE BASE, Texas (AFPN) -- An Albuquerque, N.M., student from Del Norte High School is the grand prizewinner of the U.S. Air Force-sponsored “2005 Win the Perfect Prom Sweepstakes.”Erin Whitaker, a junior, was selected at random from more than 70,000 entries. She won $1,500 for her prom expenses and use of an SUV limousine for the evening of prom. Her school also is being awarded $20,000 toward its prom expenses, which may include facility rental, decorations, catering and disc jockey. In addition, the school won a live performance by recording artists Wakefield. The prom sweepstakes allows Air Force officials to reinforce and expand a message for high school students: "Be safe. Be smart. Be sober. Make the right choice." "We want young people to make good choices," said Master Sgt. Joseph Hunter, the Air Force Recruiting Service account executive for enlisted advertising programs here. "Students will be exposed to the safety message so they are aware that an otherwise perfect prom can be ruined in an instant by the unsafe and unwise use of alcohol or drugs. All we want them to do is make the right choice during this high-risk event."More than 15,000 high schools across the country received promotional materials to inform students how to enter the sweepstakes. The program was also highlighted in popular teen magazines and on Web sites. Students were able to enter online.Ten first-place prizewinners each are being awarded $500 for personal prom expenses, and 25 second-place prizewinners are receiving a $150 award for their prom expenses. Prizes of Wakefield's new CD were also awarded to 130 weekly third-place winners during the contest period, which ran December through February.
