Fairchild tests centralized computer support Published Feb. 11, 2005 FAIRCHILD AIR FORCE BASE, Wash. (AFPN) -- A handful of information managers at the network control center here assumed responsibility for a portion of computer workgroup management operations Feb. 7.This is the beginning of a year-long Air Force test program called Pathfinder-Workgroup Management.The base was selected for the test by Air Mobility Command officials because of its size, capabilities, network operations management.“The Pathfinder program places all responsibility for computer support that’s normally provided by the unit’s primary and alternate workgroup managers on one centralized 20-(person) team,” said Senior Master Sgt. Ed Hopper, the information management career field manager with the 92nd Communications Squadron. “(The) team is subdivided into four 5-person teams, each one assigned to oversee a functional area or zone within the (wing).”Three more zones are scheduled to activate within the next few months, and the test will conclude in December, officials said.“The purpose of the test is not to centralize the workgroup management process, but to provide valuable manpower work measurements for the (information managers),” Sergeant Hopper said.Officials said they expect the test results to show better use of people, improved practices and relationships between the network control center and workgroup managers, and a more proficient, deployable force.“The Pathfinder program means a change in the way you, the customer, seek assistance for a computer related issue,” said Senior Master Sgt. Mick Woods, the superintendent of the center. “In the past, if you had a computer problem or needed technical assistance, you’d ask one of your unit’s workgroup managers to help. Under this test, you’ll need to contact your zone team’s service desk.”Each call will be handled on a priority basis, officials said. If an issue cannot be resolved remotely, either on telephone or over the network, a workgroup manager will be sent to the office to troubleshoot the problem.
