Academy competes at hockey tournament Published Jan. 3, 2005 DENVER (AFPN) -- The Air Force Academy hockey team met some stiff competition Jan. 2 during the 13th annual Denver Cup tournament. The Falcons fell to 9-7-2 after tangling with two nationally ranked teams.In the first match, University of Denver's Jon Foster scored three goals to lead seventh-ranked Denver to a 9-4 win over the Falcons. In the consolation match, Colgate University, ranked 12th in the nation, scored three third-period goals to defeat Air Force, 3-0.In the opening round, Denver jumped ahead with three goals in the first period, and then the teams combined for eight goals in the second period. After each team scored four goals in the second, Denver put the game away with two in the third. Denver outshot the Falcons 34-27 during the match.During the consolation match, an up-tempo opening period was nearly even, with Colgate taking nine shots and Air Force taking five. The second period was all Colgate, but the game remained scoreless after the first 40 minutes. The Raiders out-shot the Falcons 16-3 in the second period and held a 25-8 advantage after the first two periods. Colgate finally struck in the first three minutes of the third period. Then things settled down until the last two minutes of the match when Colgate scored two more goals.The Falcons next travel to northern Minnesota where they will take on the Bemidji State University Beavers for a two-game series Jan. 7 and 8.
