Two early second-half goals by Jeff Rowland led the third-ranked University of New Mexico men’s soccer team to a 2-0 victory over the Air Force Academy here Oct. 14.

With the victory, New Mexico remains the only unbeaten and untied team in the country at 10-0 overall and 4-0 in Mountain Pacific Sports Federation, while Air Force drops its third straight game and is 6-5-1 overall and 2-3 in the federation.

After a scoreless first half, Rowland put the UNM Lobos on the board just 1 minute, 15 seconds after halftime as he redirected a shot from Patrick Grange past Falcon goalie Paul Elsbernd. Grange fired his shot from about 20 yards to the left of Elsbernd, and Rowland, who was standing directly in front of the net, knocked it in with his back to the goal.

In the 52nd minute, Rowland took a pass from Jeff Krause that sailed over the Falcon defense and put Rowland one-on-one with Elsbernd. After corralling the ball down the left side, Rowland shot the ball past Elsbernd at about the 18-yard mark and into the net.

Shots were at a premium in the game, as there were only seven on goal in the entire 90 minutes. New Mexico had four shots on goal and 13 total, while the Falcons mustered just eight total shots and three on net. New Mexico goalie Andrew Weber saved all three in posting his sixth shout of the season. Elsbernd had two saves for the Falcons.

The Falcons next play at San Jose State on Oct. 22 and then Sacramento State on Oct. 24.
