Read about how Airmen are becoming “fit to fight,” learn how two Air Force recruiters survived an explosion in Iraq, and discover how one correctional-custody program keeps Airmen from crossing out of the blue. These features and more highlight the October issue of Airman magazine, now available in print and online at www.af.mil/news/airman/.

Are you Fit to Fight? -- From Honduras to Alaska, and even at deployed locations such as Afghanistan, Airmen are embracing the new fit-to-fight program. It is tougher than the ergometry test, but many Airmen seem happy to dismount the stationary bike and head to the gym where they feel hard work and sweat is proportional to a better score.

Reflections of the Past -- Sixty years ago, the men of the 398th Bombardment Group were getting shot at over France during World War II. This year, on the anniversary of the D-Day invasion, the French gave surviving Airmen and their families a hero’s welcome. They never forgot the Americans who liberated them from German occupation.

Starting from Scratch -- Nobody said the recruiting business was easy. Just ask Capt. Pete Ellum and Master Sgt. Greg Elmore. They went to Iraq to help pick the nation’s new military. What they experienced while recruiting in embattled Iraq was not business as usual.

Crossing the Red Line -- Sometimes Airmen make mistakes that cost them their military careers. But at Keesler Air Force Base, Miss., and other bases worldwide, leaders rely on correctional-custody programs to turn wayward Airmen into productive servicemembers.

Just Silly Ghost Stories? – A ghost. Some people say baloney -- there is no such thing. Others swear restless spirits roam the places where they work and live. Regardless, people are still trying to find plausible explanations for the paranormal.
