Air Force takes 5-3 win over BYU

Sixth-seeded Air Force Academy advanced to the second day of the 2004 Mountain West Conference Baseball Championships after snapping a 34-game losing streak. A solid pitching performance from Clayton Couch clenched a 5-3 win over fourth-seeded Brigham Young University here May 26.

Couch improved to 3-7 on the season, tossing a complete game five-hitter. The sophomore right-hander fanned seven and held BYU to just two base hits after the fourth inning. Losing pitcher was BYU starter Bryce Searle, who gave up three runs in 2.1 innings pitched.

The Falcons had nine hits in the game, led by Brent Tittle, who went 2-for-5 with two RBIs. Jason Brown also had two hits on the day. The academy set a tourney record with five stolen bases.

Earlier in the day, Air Force lost 13-9 to third-seeded University of Nevada-Las Vegas after UNLV got the jump with an eight-run first inning.

UNLV starter Matt Wagner earned the win, allowing seven runs on 10 hits in six innings pitched. Both teams had 13 hits in the game, with the Rebels stranding 13 runners on base. Falcon freshman Karl Bolt continued to swing a hot bat, going 3-for-5 with three RBIs and two runs scored. Junior Reid Lamson also had his best game as a Falcon, going 3-for-4 with a run and an RBI.

The Falcons play the loser of the UNLV-University of New Mexico game May 27.
