Pilot killed in F-16 collision

One pilot was killed and another injured when two F-16 Fighting Falcons collided during a training mission over the Indiana and Illinois border May 17.

The pilots and aircraft were assigned to the Indiana Air National Guard’s 181st Fighter Wing at Terre Haute.

Maj. William E. Burchett, from Arlington, Tenn., was killed. An Air Force Academy graduate, Major Burchett had been assigned to the 181st FW since September 2000. He had more than 2,300 hours of flying time in F-16, F-4 Phantom and T-38 Talon aircraft.

Maj. Thomas R. Sims ejected from his disabled aircraft following the collision. He was treated and released from a hospital in Vincennes, Ind. Major Sims is a resident of Indianapolis.

The cause of the accident will be investigated, officials said.
