Secretary of defense announces environmental awards

Secretary of Defense Donald H. Rumsfeld announced the winners of the 2003 Secretary of Defense Annual Environmental Awards on May 3.

Air Force winners are:

-- Natural resources conservation, small installations: Columbus Air Force Base, Miss.

-- Natural resources conservation, individual: Gregory Lee, of the 347th Civil Engineer Squadron at Moody AFB, Ga.

-- Pollution prevention, industrial installation: Robins AFB, Ga.

-- Environmental restoration, installation: Tinker AFB, Okla.

-- Environmental restoration, team: 45th Space Wing at Patrick AFB, Fla.

-- Environmental excellence in weapon system acquisition, team: Aeronautical Systems Center at Wright-Patterson AFB, Ohio.

Each year, the secretary of defense honors installations, teams and individuals for outstanding environmental management by servicemembers and civilians, at both domestic and overseas bases.

Environmental awards are given for six categories: natural resources conservation, cultural resources management, environmental quality, pollution prevention, environmental excellence in weapon system acquisition and environmental restoration.
