Academy honors distinguished graduates Published March 31, 2004 U.S. AIR FORCE ACADEMY, Colo. (AFPN) -- Contributions to the Air Force and nation have earned two Air Force Academy alumni the school’s distinguished graduate awards. Retired Lt. Gen. Bradley C. Hosmer and Richard T. Schlosberg III have earned the 2003 Distinguished Graduate Award. The award is recognized by the academy and Association of Graduates for alumni who have contributed to the academy's heritage and their contributions to society and the nation. The two men are the third pair of graduates to be given this award.General Hosmer graduated in the first academy class in 1959 as the top graduate, and he is the first graduate to serve as academy superintendent. He was a command pilot with more than 4,000 flying hours in mostly fighters and served as president of the National Defense University in Washington. During his tenure as superintendent from June 1991 to June 1994, General Hosmer helped develop the academy’s core values -- Integrity First, Service Before Self, Excellence in All We Do. The Air Force later adopted those principles as its core values. Mr. Schlosberg graduated in 1965. As a captain, he earned the Air Medal with five oak leaf clusters after serving two tours of duty in Southeast Asia where he flew more than 200 combat-support missions as a KC-135 Stratotanker pilot. After graduating with honors from Harvard Business School, Mr. Schlosberg began a 25-year career in publishing. In 1999, Mr. Schlosberg became president and chief executive officer of The David and Lucile Packard Foundation where he led efforts to improve early childhood education and health, support emerging scientists, protect oceans and advance reproductive rights.
