Air Force announces media contest winners

A panel of civilian journalists, teachers and public relations professionals selected the best in Air Force print and broadcast journalism for the 48th annual Air Force Media Contest. The winners were announced March 17.

Master Sgt. Deborah Smith, from the Colorado National Guard headquarters public affairs office, is the Air Force print journalist of the year. Tech. Sgt. William Scherer, from the Air Force News Service at the Air Force News Agency here, is the Air Force broadcast journalist of the year.

Sergeants Smith and Scherer will join the winners in other broadcast and print journalism categories to represent the Air Force in the annual Department of Defense Thomas Jefferson Awards next month.

Winners in the print-media category are:

Metro-Format Newspaper: Robins Rev-Up from the Warner Robins Air Logistics Center at Robins Air Force Base, Ga.

Tabloid-Format Newspaper: Lackland Talespinner from the 37th Training Wing at Lackland AFB, Texas.

Magazine-Format Publication: Gulf Wing from the 403rd Wing at Keesler AFB, Miss.

Newsletter-Format Publication: Associate Press, from the 446th Airlift Wing at McChord AFB, Wash.

News Article: First Lt. Phillip Ulmer from the 86th AW at Ramstein Air Base, Germany.

Feature Article: First Lt. Brandon Lingle from the Air Force Personnel Center at Randolph AFB, Texas.

Commentary: Geoff Janes from the WR-ALC.

Sports Article: Brandy Buzinski from the 11th Wing at Bolling AFB, D.C.

Series: Lois Walsh from the Air Armament Center at Eglin AFB, Fla.

Stand-Alone Photograph: Tech. Sgt. Andrew Biscoe from the 439th AW at Westover Air Reserve Base, Mass.
