Air Force boxers qualify for Olympic trials

Three Air Force boxers have qualified for the U.S. Olympic Boxing Trials during the 2003 Armed Forces Boxing Championship held at Camp Lejeune, N.C., from Dec. 7 to 12.

-- Airman 1st Class Hector Ramos from Travis Air Force Base, Calif., won the 132-pound lightweight class.

-- Airman James Johnson Jr. from Dyess AFB, Texas, won the 165-pound middleweight class.

-- Airman 1st Class Jose Casasola from Eglin AFB, Fla., won the 112-pound flyweight class.

Staff Sgt. Charmaine Carrington from Eglin AFB, who is ranked second in the nation in her 138-pound weight class, won an exhibition match.

The Army won the team event with 14 points, followed by the Air Force with seven points, the Marine Corps with six points and the Navy with two points.

The Air Force Team will now advance to the USA Boxing National Championship to be held from Jan. 10 to 18 in Colorado Springs, Colo. Winners at this event will join the other Olympic trial qualifiers at the western regionals from Feb. 3 to 7 in Bakersfield, Calif.
