Air Force announces OTS selections

Air Force officials are giving 84 enlisted airmen the chance to trade in their stripes for gold bars by choosing them to attend Officer Training School, officials announced Dec. 16.

Air Force Recruiting Service officials considered 515 applications and selected 157 as part of Officer Training School Selection Board 0402, which met here Nov 17 to 21, for a 30-percent selection rate.

As part of the selection process, board members review both objective and subjective factors. Objectively, board members consider each applicant’s academic discipline, grade-point average and Air Force Officer Qualifying Test scores. Subjectively, they evaluate work experience, accomplishments, adaptability, character, leadership ability, potential for future growth and other recommendations. For active-duty enlisted applicants, performance reports and commander’s recommendations are also evaluated.

Five Air Force colonels review every application. The selection process is similar to an Air Force officer promotion board. No single factor leads to an individual's selection or nonselection, said OTS selection officials.

People selected can expect class-assignment information about eight weeks after their physical is certified. The OTS boards meet about every six weeks.

The school is only one way to gain a commission. The Air Force also sends more than 1,000 people to the U.S. Air Force Academy and awards more than $60 million in ROTC scholarships. Service officials continue to search for qualified officers, including doctors, dentists, nurses, pharmacists and engineers.
