Air Force investigators determined that two rivets failed on an improperly loaded B-1B Lancer bomber. The aircraft sustained almost $1.3 million in damage during a March 31 bombing mission.

The four-member crew landed the aircraft safely at its forward-deployed location. A ground crew discovered the damage.

According to an accident investigation board report released Aug. 21, an uneven bomb load caused the rivets on the ejector rack to fail. The malfunction damaged the aircraft but did not result in an accidental release of munitions, other loss or injury.

The crew and aircraft are assigned to the 28th Bomb Wing at Ellsworth Air Force Base, S.D. At the time of the mishap, they were assigned to the 34th Expeditionary Bomb Squadron. (Courtesy of Air Combat Command News Service)
