Airman killed in car accident

One airman was killed and another critically injured Aug. 13 in a car accident 40 miles south of Omaha, Neb.

Airman 1st Class Ellee Smathers, 20, of Deland, Fla., was killed, and Airman Charles Capobianco of Bradenton, Fla., was injured.

The airmen had just finished participating in the recruiter-assistance program in Florida after graduating from technical training here in July. They were en route to their new duty station at Ellsworth Air Force Base, S.D.

Civilian authorities are investigating the cause of the accident.

The death was the Air Force’s 25th since the “101 Critical Days of Summer” safety campaign started May 24. Twenty-one of the deaths involved vehicles.
