Airman, friend help deliver baby Published July 14, 2003 By Ben Kessler 27th Fighter Wing Public Affairs CANNON AIR FORCE BASE, N.M. (AFPN) -- An airman here watched his son come into the world in a way he and his wife never expected.Airman 1st Class Aaron Taylor, of the 27th Equipment Maintenance Squadron, and his wife, Jessica, welcomed Aidan recently with the help of their neighbor and a clear telephone connection. Jessica woke up at home about 2:45 a.m. with contractions.“We called the women’s clinic, and they told me to time my contractions for an hour,” Jessica said. “We called them back within 20 minutes and were still on the phone with them when I realized I was having the baby right now.”“I was scared at first, but I put it behind me so I could concentrate on delivering my baby healthy,” Aaron said. Before the birth seemed imminent, he made a phone call to his neighbor and friend Bridget Sikes, wife of Tech. Sgt. James Sikes, also of the 27th EMS. Aaron asked her to come and watch the Taylors’ 23-month-old son, Quinn, so they could go to the hospital. When Sikes reached the Taylors’ house, she said she was surprised to hear loud screams from inside. She found Aaron holding the phone with one hand, talking to a 9-1-1 dispatcher, and supporting the head of the baby with the other.“At first, I thought Jessica was just having major contractions,” said Sikes, who is also a mother. “I opened the door and saw the baby’s head and went in to take care of things without thinking.”“Bridget being there made all the difference,” Aaron said. “She had the phone and was telling me what the 9-1-1 dispatcher was advising.” Aidan was born at approximately 3:35 a.m., before anyone really had a chance to let the circumstances sink in.“It all happened so fast,” Sikes said. “We really didn’t have time to think. It was such an amazing experience. I’m glad I was there to help.”“I feel really good,” Aaron said. “We have a second healthy son, and it was an exhilarating life experience.” (Courtesy of Air Combat Command News Service)
