Airman killed, 2nd injured in ambush

Staff Sgt. Patrick Lee Griffin Jr., 31, of Elgin, S.C., was killed in action May 13 near Diwaniyah, Iraq. Griffin was killed when his convoy was ambushed en route to Baghdad.

Master Sgt. Jeffery Gore suffered a leg wound in the ambush and is in stable condition. He is the weapons and tactics superintendent for the 728th Air Control Squadron here.

Griffin was a data systems technician in the squadron here.

“We should thank God for the men and women willing to serve our country in dangerous places,” said Col. Ted Kresge, 33rd Fighter Wing commander. “Sergeant Griffin represents the best of them.”

Griffin is survived by his wife, a son, 4, and a daughter, 2.
