Air Force combat controller killed in action Published April 11, 2003 HURLBURT FIELD, Fla. (AFPN) -- A staff sergeant assigned to the 24th Special Tactics Squadron at Pope Air Force Base, N.C., was killed in action April 8 in Iraq.Staff Sgt. Scott D. Sather, an Air Force combat controller, was 29 years old."I offer my condolences to Sergeant Sather's family, friends and teammates," said Lt. Gen. Paul V. Hester, the commander of Air Force Special Operations Command. "His ultimate sacrifice for our great nation is a constant reminder of the service and dedication of the men and women in uniform to a cherished principle -- freedom."Sather was from Clio, Mich. He joined the Air Force in 1992 and had been stationed at Pope since 1999.
