Air Force daughter wins art contest Published March 14, 2003 ALEXANDRIA, Va. (AFPN) -- Sixth-grader Karen Nicholson drew her family surrounding the head of a bald eagle in an entry that won her first place in the 2003 Armed Services YMCA Art Contest. She beat out a record 3,000-plus entries to win this year's contest.Karen is the daughter of Lt. Col. Philip and Dori Nicholson of Moody Air Force Base, Ga.Armed Services YMCA officials March 14 announced the winners in the ninth annual art contest. Six first-place winners, in categories including the five armed forces and the National Guard, receive a $500 U.S. Savings Bond. In addition, Karen's artwork will be used on a poster promoting Military Family Month in November.First-grader Andrew Arnold, son of Capt. Lyle and Michelle Arnold of Peterson AFB, Colo., took a few art lessons before drawing his entry featuring father and son holding hands. He wins a $100 savings bond.The winners' artwork is posted on the Armed Services YMCA Web site at www.asymca.org. Children whose artwork reached the final judging are listed as honorable mentions.
