Air Force names top chaplains Published March 3, 2003 WASHINGTON (AFPN) -- Air Force officials named the service's top chaplains of the year.Each year chaplain service officials name four "Chaplain of the Year" award winners, in memory of four World War II chaplains who sacrificed themselves by giving their lifejackets to others after the USS Dorchester was torpedoed by a German submarine.This year's winners are Chaplain (Lt. Col.) Jeff Swanson, Laughlin Air Force Base, Texas; Chaplain (Lt. Col.) Perry Irby, Hurlburt Field, Fla; Master Sgt. Ivory Baker, Offutt AFB, Neb., and Fran Daily, Randolph AFB, Texas.The Military Chaplain Association Distinguished Service Award goes to Chaplain (Capt.) Randall D. Groves from Davis-Monthan AFB, Ariz.
