Lieutenant colonels and colonels who are eligible to meet the Selective Early Retirement Board slated for Dec. 9 still have time to volunteer for retirement before the Nov. 15 window closes, Air Force Personnel Center officials said.

SERB is one of several force management programs to be implemented in fiscal 2014 to help size and balance the force to meet authorized end strength levels, said Lt. Col. Ricardo Garcia, The Air Force Personnel Center retirement and separations branch chief.

The SERB will consider lieutenant colonels who have been twice non-selected for promotion to colonel by Dec. 9, the date the board convenes. Career fields affected include Line of the Air Force, Nurse Corps, Biomedical Sciences Corps, Line of the Air Force - Judge Advocate General and Medical Services Corps.

In addition, Dec. 9 SERB will consider colonels who have four years or more of active duty time in grade as of the date the board convenes. This SERB will consider colonels from Line of the Air Force, Nurse Corps, Biomedical Sciences Corps, Line of the Air Force - Judge Advocate General and Medical Services Corps. Colonels who met the 2010 or 2012 board will not be considered this year.

SERB-eligible officers who do not want to meet the Dec. 9 board may apply for voluntary retirement now through Nov. 15 and may request a retirement date effective up to Sept. 1, 2014. Members may still apply after Nov. 15, but those who do will meet the SERB and, if selected, will have a July 1, 2014 retirement date established for them, Garcia said.
