Air Combat Command commander, Gen. Herbert Carlisle, hosted reporters from the Defense Writer’s Group during a breakfast at the Fairmont Washington Hotel in Washington, D.C., Nov. 10.

The DWG is an assembly of national security reporters from major publications across the nation that convenes for Q-and-A sessions with top military and government officials several times throughout the year.

“I believe in what you do, I believe we have to be open and transparent and I believe we have to get the message out -- we have to talk,” Carlisle said. “I’m open to having these discussions at any time to tell you what I’m thinking.”

Carlisle fielded questions ranging from the intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance enterprise to remotely piloted aircraft to the Air Force’s newest platforms: the F-35 Lightning II and the Long Range Strike Bomber. Carlisle also emphasized the importance of leveraging all operational platforms and building a survivable and sustainable force.

“We’re doing war-gaming and looking at what things would look like,” Carlisle said. “One of today’s challenges is capacity. Capability is a great thing, and obviously we need fifth-generation capabilities against the advanced capabilities of potential adversaries out there. We need capabilities, but we also need capacity.”

Members of the DWG included reporters from the Los Angeles Times, Time Magazine, Air Force Magazine and the Huffington Post.
