1950's -- August 5, 1954. The Boeing B-52A "Stratofortress," first production model in a new series of long range bombers, is shown taking off from Boeing Field, Wash., on its maiden flight. It is powered by eight Pratt and Whitney Aircraft J-57 turbojet engines, each rated in the 10,000 pound of thrust class. the new bomber has a wing span of 185 feet, length of 156 feet, tail height of 48 feet and gross weight of more than 350,000 pounds.
