1950's -- A production model B-47A Stratojet, the fastest known bomber in the world, flies near the Boeing Aircraft Co. production plant in Wichita, Kan., Aug. 11. 1950. The swept-wing bomber has a top speed of more than 600 miles an hour. It is powered by six General Electric J-47 turbo-jet engines, has a maximum gross takeoff weight of more than 186,000 pounds and can carry more than 20,000 pounds of bombs.

1950's -- August 5, 1954. The Boeing B-52A "Stratofortress," first production model in a new series of long range bombers, is shown taking off from Boeing Field, Wash., on its maiden flight. It is powered by eight Pratt and Whitney Aircraft J-57 turbojet engines, each rated in the 10,000 pound of thrust class. the new bomber has a wing span of 185 feet, length of 156 feet, tail height of 48 feet and gross weight of more than 350,000 pounds. Boeing XB-52

1950's -- Boeing XB-52 "Stratofortress" 1953 in flight. The prototype Stratofortress had a crew of five with the pilot and copilot seated in tandem under a B-47 style canopy. This canopy was only used on the two prototype aircraft (XB-52 & YB-52), all production aircraft had the familiar side-by-side cockpit. With eight jet engines mounted in pairs on a wing with a 35° sweep, the XB-52 had a maximum speed greater than 600 mph. Bombing of the Ostfriesland

Used as a target ship for bombing attacks near Cape Henry, Va., the Ostfriesland was sunk by bombs July 21, 1921. Brig. Gen. Billy Mitchell, an outspoken supporter of air power, waged a war throughout his career against his superiors who believed that the airplane was better suited for observation. As head of aviation in the Army Signal Corps during World War I, Mitchell felt otherwise--he knew the power of aviation for the military.
