Instead of withdrawing, Major Loring aimed his F-80 Shooting Star directly at the gun positions and crashed into them, destroying them upon impact. On Nov. 22, 1952, while leading a flight of four F-80 Shooting Stars against enemy gun positions in Korea, Maj. Charles J. Loring was hit repeatedly by ground fire during his dive. Instead of withdrawing, Major Loring aimed his F-80 directly at the gun positions and crashed into them, destroying them upon impact. Major Loring received the Medal of Honor for his sacrifice.

In 1910 Benjamin D. Foulois was sent to Texas with a Wright Pusher to establish the embryo of what developed into the U. S. Army Air Corps. He had to teach himself to fly with the assistance from the Wright Brothers in a series of letters. In a career that spanned six decades, Foulois designed the first airplane radio receiver, scouted Pancho Villa's rebels from an open-cockpit Curtis JN3 and demonstrated that the airplane was no longer an experiment or novelty, but a practical tool with many use military applications.

Maj. George E. "Bud" Day, a downed F-100 Super Sabre pilot, became the only known American to escape into South Vietnam after being captured in the north.
