Hurricane Dennis eyes Gulf Coast, packing major winds

HURLBURT FIELD, Fla. -- Lines at the gas station here snarled traffic July 8 as people prepared to evacuate before Hurricane Dennis made landfall. Gas, water, ice, batteries and hurricane survival staples grew scarce. Base officials ordered the evacuation of all but mission-essential personnel July 8, which should reduce the 16,000-plus population here to fewer than 200 people. THULE AIR BASE, Greenland -- Mount Dundas, overlooking the polar ice cap and three glaciers, was the location for the 20th Annual Mount Dundas Open, the northernmost golf tournament in the world, here July 3. More than 35 participants climbed 800 feet of shale rock to reach the nine-hole par-3 course. Online purchase turns into historical find

Fuels specialist is 'for the birds'

EGLIN AIR FORCE BASE, Fla. -- Bluebird hatchlings snuggle together on a cold morning. A typical nest has between three to five eggs, said Master Sgt. William Burke, a fuels specialist with the 96th Logistics Readiness Squadron here. After incubating for two weeks, the blue eggs hatch.
