Getting smart
SOUTHWEST ASIA -- Senior Airman Alexander Murillo inserts a fuse initiator into an MK-82 bomb. The initiator provides power to the fuse during the bombs fall. This bomb is being fitted with a tail kit, turning it into a "smart bomb." By adding low-cost intelligence to a weapon, the accuracy of a bomb drop increases, and the cost of putting bombs on target decreases.
