Lt. Col. Laura Barnes earned the Special Commendation Medal from the United Kingdom's Defence Science and Technology Laboratory on Sept. 14, 2011. The award is one of the highest honors bestowed upon Ministry of Defence researchers and this was the first time it was awarded to a foreign national.
