Tech. Sgt. Aaron Avery attaches de-oscillation ties to pallets of relief supplies aboard a C-17 Globemaster III cargo aircraft Jan. 18, 2010, at Pope Air Force Base, N.C., before it takes off for a humanitarian mission to Haiti. Sergeant Avery is a loadmaster from the 16th Airlift Squadron at Charleston Air Force Base, S.C. The C-17 conducted the first humanitarian air delivery mission over Haiti. U.S. Southern Command is deploying assets to Haiti to conduct search and rescue operations, damage assessments and sustained humanitarian assistance and disaster relief operations.
