Fairford Airmen prepare for shuttle launch
Lt. Col. (Dr.) Tom Hoffman gives the thumbs-up to firefighters during a space shuttle recovery exercise Nov. 16. Royal Air Force Fairford, United Kingdom, is one of nine alternate landing sites for the space shuttle. If the launch was aborted, Airmen from the 420th Air Base Group would lead the rescue and recovery efforts. Colonel Hoffman is a flight doctor assigned to the 45th Space Wing at Patrick Air Force Base, Fla. The next shuttle launch is scheduled for Dec. 6. (U.S. Air Force photo/Tech. Sgt. Kristina Barrett)
